Alberta Strategic Recruitment Stream
NOTE: This stream was terminated on June 14, 2018. Applications to it postmarked on or before this date will be processed, however, in accordance with the eligibility criteria that was in place for this stream at the time of application.
The Strategic Recruitment Stream is composed of three different categories, each with its own specific set of eligibility criteria.
- Compulsory and Optional Trades Category
- Engineering Occupations Category
- Post-Graduate Worker Category
Compulsory and Optional Trades Category
This category is open to supervisors, foremen and tradespersons who are working in a compulsory or optional trade in the province of Alberta.
NOTE: The government of Alberta does not specify NOC codes on its list of compulsory and optional trades. It uses the government of Canada's classifications. The information below is provided as a guide only.

Minimum Requirements
Individuals may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:
- Intend to live and work in Alberta permanently;
- Have one of the following:
- An Alberta Qualification Certificate in a compulsory or optional trade, or
- An Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Recognized Trade Certificate in a compulsory or optional trade.
- Be residing in Alberta at the time of application on a valid work permit
- Show, at time of application, that they are either:
- Currently working in their trade for an Alberta employer, or
- Have been working in their trade for an Alberta employer for minimum 6 months in past 3 years.
When not to apply
Candidates should not apply if they are not working in an optional or compulsory trade in Alberta. In addition, individuals in the following circumstances are also ineligible under the Strategic Recruitment Stream:
- Refugee claimants, or individuals involved in a federal appeal or removal process;
- Live-in Caregivers currently living in Canada;
- Temporary Foreign Workers working and residing in a province other than Alberta; and,
- International students studying in Canada and doing co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program.
Engineering Occupations Category
This category is open to engineers, designers, and drafters in a variety of fields. In order to apply, an individual’s occupation must among the following:
- NOC 2241 (Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technologists/Technicians)
- NOC 2231 (Civil Engineering Technologists/Technicians)
- NOC 2144 (Geological Engineers)
- NOC 2141 (Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers)
- NOC 2133 (Electrical and Electronics Engineers)
- NOC 2131 (Civil Engineers)
- NOC 0211 (Engineering Managers)
- NOC 2132 (Mechanical Engineers)
- NOC 2134 (Chemical Engineers)
- NOC 2143 (Mining Engineers)
- NOC 2145 (Petroleum Engineers)
- NOC 2232 (Mechanical Engineering Technologists/Technicians)
- NOC 2253 (Drafting Technologists/Technicians)
Minimum Requirements
Individuals may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:
- Have evidence of education/training and experience as an engineer, designer or drafter; and
- Intend to live and work in Alberta permanently;
- Be currently residing in Alberta;
- Currently be working or have worked in last two years in Alberta for an Alberta employer.
Individuals with credentials who are working in one of the following occupations must provides a 'Letter of No Objection' from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or show that they are registered with APEGA.
When not to apply
Candidates should not apply if they are not working in an occupation listed on the AINP Strategic Recruitment Stream Engineering Occupations List. In addition, individuals in the following circumstances are also ineligible under the Strategic Recruitment Stream:
- Temporary Foreign Workers working and residing in a province other than Alberta; and,
- Refugee claimants, or individuals involved in a federal appeal or removal process;
- Live-in Caregivers currently living in Canada;
- International students studying in Canada and doing co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program.
Post-Graduate Worker Category
Students who graduated from an eligible post-secondary educational institution in Alberta, and who are residing in the province on a Post-Graduation Work Permit, may apply to this program.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:
- Intend to live and work in Alberta permanently;
- Be working full-time in Alberta for an Alberta employer at the time of application;
- Have obtained a certificate, diploma, or degree, or have completed a graduate level program from an approved institution (see below). The completed program of study in Alberta must be at least one year long; and
- Hold a valid Post-Graduation Work Permit.
In addition, the applicant must be working in an NOC level 0, A, B, or C occupation. Certain occupations are ineligible. If the applicant is working in a NOC C (semi-skilled) level occupation, he or she must submit language test results showing scores of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher in English or French.

Candidates should not apply if they are working in an occupation on the Post-Graduate Worker Category ineligible occupations list. In addition, individuals in the following circumstances are also ineligible under the Strategic Recruitment Stream:
